When the first version of these speakers (the 101/2) came on the market in 1990, they were the smallest design ever to earn in a place in KEF's state of the art Reference Series. The New York Times raved about them, saying “The little speaker lists at $1600 a pair, or $2100 less than [the model 103/5, which the Times calls “one of the best speakers, ever”]. This difference in price makes the similarity in sound all the more remarkable. As might be expected, the larger speaker reaches deeper in the bass and handles greater power levels; but otherwise the two designs sound surprisingly alike, sharing the same velvety highs and the same sense of clarity and spaciousness.” In 1992, KEF improved the design even further, with a new reflex cabinet for deeper bass response, and improvements to the drivers. The improved version is the one offered here, the model 101/3.

These little British-made gems work perfectly and sound fantastic. KEF'S “UniQ” placement of the tweeter dead center in the woofer contributes to their pinpoint accurate imaging across the soundstage. The crossove and dual speaker terminals allow you to bi-amp or bi-wire them, if you wish.

This is a factory-matched pair, each with the same serial number, one designated as “A” and the other as “B.” 13 inches high, 8.5 wide, and 10.4 deep. Not quite 16 lbs. each. They are rated at 4 ohms and can take up to 150 watts of power. Full magnetic shielding makes them perfectly safe with all home theater and computer set-ups. Also a great choice as passive near field monitors for studio recording.
